Dojo Protocol

  • All members will perform a bow when entering or leaving the DOJO and workout area
  • The highest rank on the premises will initiate the ceremonial opening and closing of the class
  • Any black belt running a class will stop the class at an opportune time and will bow to any higher Goju rank that enters or leaves the DOJO. This practice will be optional for lower rank belts or non Goju black belts who enter the DOJO

Rules of the Dojo:

  1. EVERYONE Works
  2. NOTHING is Free
  3. ALL Start at the Bottom
  4. The Sensei’s word is law by consent of the governed

Personal Protocol:

  • All students will bow to their sensei with their eyes down
  • A kyu will initiate a bow to any black belt
  • Any black belt will initiate a bow to a higher rank

Sparring/Kumite:

  • Excessive force – no person will train at the expense of others
  • Kyu’s will not ask dans to fight
  • When bowing into a fight always look the opponent in the eyes, except when bowing to the Sensei
  • During fighting, any person receiving a controlled ippon technique will respond with some form of acknowledgement. This teaches modesty and gives thanks for using control

Uniform Code:

The accepted uniform is the traditional Japanese Gi. White will be worn by all kyu (under black belt) and optional black for black belts. In order to maintain a superior image and discipline, the uniform will be transported in three ways: folded in a traditional fashion, inside a carry bag or worn. All uniforms must be clean and presentable.

Types of Uniform:

  • Traditional Gi
  • Formal Wear (promotions and demonstrations):

    • 4th and 5th dans—white Gi with black Hakama optional
    • 6th dans and above—white Gi with white Hakama optional

    Accessories:

    Belt (OBI)
According to tradition, the belt will never be washed or placed on the ground. The traditional knot is a square knot tied so that the wedge is facing left. Optional inscriptions on the belt will be your name in the language you speak on one end and the Goju Ryu Karate-Do kanji on the other end. All belts will indicate rank
    Headband (Hajimake)
Any type of headband that promotes Goju Ryu may be worm at any time
